This snap shows conduit work under way at Wellington railway station in the 1920s. But historian Allan Frost, who e-mailed us this photo, wonders whether the work was needed to tame an ancient stream. Mr Frost will be giving a talk about Wellington’s archaeology on Wednesday at the town’s Civic Offices at 7.30pm, the latest in a series of free public talks organised by the town’s history group. “I shall be revealing a wide range of ‘archaeological’ discoveries and showing why you don’t need to get your hands dirty when digging around,” he said.
