Pictures from the past – June 3

The poor lad on the right didn’t even get a seat! This photo was loaned by Dave Barnett, of Arleston, who says this is the old school at Dawley Bank or Lawley Bank. Its general appearance is Victorian – could we be going back as early as the 1870s or 1880s? And what is the lad on the far left carrying? It looks like some sort of odd helmet – but why haven’t any of the other children got them?

We think we can safely say that there have been some technological changes within the control tower at RAF Shawbury since this photograph was taken on April 8, 1971. The aircraft you can just about see outside are now – if any exist at all – museum pieces. The photo shows Leading Aircraftwoman W. Mendes and Flight Lieutenant W.R.H. Long.
