There’s plenty going on in this Market Drayton street scene which looks to date from the 1930s. There are a couple of shop names on the left that older Drayton folk might remember – Robbins, and Melias. But who allowed that ugly telegraph pole to be put up? The poor lad on the right didn’t even get a seat! This photo was loaned by Dave Barnett, of Arleston, who says this is the old school at Dawley Bank or Lawley Bank. Its general appearance is Victorian – could we be going back as early as the 1870s or 1880s? And what is the lad on the far left carrying? It looks like some sort of odd helmet – but why haven’t any of the other children got them?
