Pictures from the Past – May 27

Friday 27th May 2011, 8:35AM BST.

If you think your work is hard, imagine how hard working life was for these Shropshire men. This picture, taken at Edge & Sons chain works at Shifnal, was loaned by Bob Mountford, of Lower Perthy, Ellesmere, who hails originally from Shifnal. "You go up Aston Street, follow the road out as if going to Tong, and there's an industrial estate where Wrekin Construction was. The other side of the road is where the chain works was. There used to be a row of cottages there which all used to belong to the chain works," he said. His father Harry, a blacksmith and wheelwright, is on the left. He lived at 41 Aston Street. Second from the right (leaning over) is Jack Payne, also of Aston Street. "I don't know the person behind him. I think my dad used to tell me he came from Oakengates way. On the right, I don't know anything about him either." This photo is undated but Mr Mountford has another, which seems contemporary, taken in 1943. Harry got pneumonia and pleurisy working at the forge and went on to work for 10 years as a postman in Shifnal.
