Pictures from the Past – May 6, 2011

It's May, so another dip today into the album of Jackfield historian Ron Miles to bring you some maypole dancing by Coalbrookdale schoolchildren, possibly in about 1910. His caption to this photo reads: "The children are posing with their indoor maypole at their junior school on the Coke Hearth. The ball bearing ribbon holder is happily still in situ (this will have been true when Ron wrote his caption). There was both a boys' school, and a separate girls' school here at the top end of the Dale. Near this spot at the foot of Jiggers Bank once stood Green Bank Halt."

A round-up of this week’s Shropshire Star nostalgia pictures.

"Shrewsbury, Boat House Inn" is the original caption for this postcard which has an Elizabeth II stamp on it. However, the view is clearly a lot older than the reign of our present Queen. Maybe around 1912 would be not far off the actual date. Incidentally, if you look closely you can see signs saying "Boat House Inn Refreshments" and "Boat House Inn" on the left. The picture comes from Mrs Diana Humphreys, of Maesbrook, near Oswestry.
