Pictures from the Past – April 22

Friday 22nd April 2011, 10:00AM BST.

What's sad about this photo is that it captures a rather genteel time which was to disappear forever shortly afterwards. It is "Roden Convalescent Home. A Whist Drive On The Lawn" and is a postcard from the "C.W.S. Roden Series" which was franked at Roden on August 15, 1913. The message was: "Roden, Wellington, Salop. Dear Sister, I am alright here. This is a perfect holiday home and lovely country. There are some nice people here and not a dull minute gusting (?? difficult to read) through. Hope to come home all right. Hope you are all well." The signature looks like B.E. Ashworth and it was addressed to (and we're making some guesses on the handwriting) Mrs Bothwell, Farmlea, Markland. H. Lane, Bolton. Picture courtesy of Ray Farlow.
