Pictures from the past – March 11, 2011

Saturday 12th March 2011, 11:30AM GMT.

The kipper ties, the parkas, the rather dodgy Polaroid snap . . . this is very much an image of its time and shows the 1970s youth of Dawley. They have gathered outside the Webb Youth Club - these days it's spelt Web for some quirky reason. The photo comes from Mick Thomas, of Malinslee, who says: "It was taken by Steve Antonsen in 1973. "Back from left are Jeff Stevens, Ray Corbett (deceased), the person with the face hidden I don't know, and Kenny Rogers. Next row down are Alan Brittle, Stephen Gittens, Chris Standrin, an unknown girl, and Gary Rutter the red round his neck is the lining to his parka. "Next row down, with the long blond hair is Terence Hampton, with red hair is Alan Goodall, then myself with my mouth open, Steve Watts, and Johnny - everybody called him Bonny - Roden, who is deceased. Front: Shaun Edgerton and Ann Devey. "I notice a lot of us had ties on. It may have been a disco or something like that. Back in that era we used to wear kipper ties - big wide ties. It was a fashion thing."
