Pictures from the Past – February 11

Anyone want to hazard a guess at the date of this picture or which Shropshire town it shows? The church at the top right of the street is probably the biggest clue. This is the centre of Whitchurch, pictured in about 1911. It is taken from an old postcard which was supplied by Mike Jordan. He obtained it while working for Shropshire County Council on the Whitchurch Demonstration Project following construction of the bypass in about 1992. He said: "The idea of studying these old photos was to get some idea of the old pavement finishes to see if similar treatments or materials could be incorporated in the town centre works."

Surely the biggest clue is the fact that it states very clearly at the top of the postcard that it’s the High Street in Whitchurch!

The lady in the picture of The Post Office Inn is my great-grandmother, Florence Pike. Florence became publican of The Post Office Inn after the death of her husband Arthur Charles Pike until her own death on 27 October 1938. She had a heart attack on the night of the experimental black-out in Shrewsbury. She was born in 1867 – I guess this picture was taken in the 1930′s. Her daughter Ivy May (Bons) Pike took over as landlady after Florence’s death.
