Pictures from the Past – February 5, 2011

Football has been gripped by a sexism row after the comments of Sky duo Richard Keys and An­dy Gray last month  but this picture proves that women have long had a key role in local football. This is the women's football team which took part in festivities at the Edstaston Coronation Day celebrations, near Wem, in 1937. Some of the members include Eva Clorley, Marjorie Edwards, Gladys Downward, Dorothy Forester and Nesta Burrows.

This is a photograph showing one of the wards of the old Royal Salop Infirmary, Shrewsbury. The date is unknown and the picture was e-mailed into us by Bob Hanley, of Telford. Work was begun on building the hospital in 1826 and completed in 1830. During the First World War balconies were added to the building, which overlooks the River Severn, to help treat wounded soldiers. The hospital in the centre of the town was in use until the 1970s when services were transferred to the new Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. The building has since been transformed into apartments and a parade of shops.
