Pictures from the Past – February 5, 2011

Friday 4th February 2011, 9:21AM GMT.

With the demise of the Wrexham & Shropshire railway service linking the county to London, trains have been firmly in the spotlight. This picture, sent in by rail enthusiast Russell Mulford, is a reminder of bygone years. It was taken in the last years of the Granville Colliery in Telford. At the time the National Coal Board not only mined the coal but also had a retail coal distribution system based at The Wharf in Donnington, so much of the coal never moved more than five miles before being burned. The stockpile of coal in the picture was probably largely for retail use.

A round-up of this week’s Shropshire Star nostalgia pictures.
