Pictures from the Past – January 22, 2011

Friday 21st January 2011, 9:21AM GMT.

A young lad stands reading a paper in the street, a clutch of ladies chat on the pavement and some cyclists are looking back to see what the photographer is up to . . . We've taken a trip back in time and landed in Wem High Street early in the 20th century. This postcard comes from the collection of Ray Farlow and looks Edwardian we'll guess at about 1908. Wem Town Hall is in the distance and, as that was formally opened on January 19,1905, it must be virtually new in this shot. "Dick's national boot stores" on the left, was, as the advertisement tells us, established in 1878. In the major change to this scene today, that building no longer exists - the others have seen mainly cosmetic alterations.

A round-up of this week’s Shropshire Star nostalgia pictures.
