It may not look it, but this is one of Church Stretton’s more unusual cherished buildings, pictured on April 21, 1972. This photo accompanied a letter in the Shropshire Star from a Cardington correspondent who signed themselves “Dry Rot”. It read: “I would like to make use of the Star Mail columns to spread the good news that the old building in High Street, Church Stretton, that once housed the toilets for the Buck’s Head, is to be preserved. “For many years various bodies and individuals have urged the demolition of this fine old building on the grounds that it was ‘unsafe, an eyesore, or no great architectural or historical interest and that its position made the entrance to the Buck’s Head car park hazardous. . . “What they overlook is that this building is old, and all old buildings should be preserved. Commonsense has once again prevailed.” What we don’t know, of course, is whether this was a “straight” letter, or one written tongue-in-cheek.
