"The dual carriageway at Aqueduct, near Madeley, on the main Wellington  Bridgnorth road," read the original caption to this picture, which dates from March 19, 1963. Dual carriageways would have been considered rather modern at the time, but why this stretch was considered a dual carriageway is puzzling, as it looks to be simply two single carriageways that are separated by a central reservation.

    why is this puzzling? a dual carriage is defined by having one, two or three lanes seperated by a central reservation (hence it has “dual carriageways”). It seems a lot of people think the dual bit of the name refers to how many lanes on each side it has!
