Shrewsbury roadworks set to cause major jams
Two months of roadworks costing £180,000 on a main route into Shrewsbury are expected to cause major disruption to motorists.
Two months of roadworks costing £180,000 on a main route into Shrewsbury are expected to cause major disruption to motorists.
The Sundorne Road improvement works will start on Monday to create an entrance for the new £13 million medical centre.
The centre is expected to serve up to 15,000 patients from Albert Road and Mount Pleasant Medical Centres when it opens later this year.
Other improvements to Sundorne Road during the works include the installation of a mini roundabout, a puffin crossing and new kerbs and road surfacing.
Today Shropshire Council chiefs revealed the full cost of the work will be £180,000.
The new primary care centre entrance will be installed opposite Meadow Farm Drive.
To limit any future disruption, the council’s highways contractor Ringway says it will carry out repairs to the pavements and roads near the site.
While the work is being carried out, traffic lights will be in place on Sundorne Road when necessary.
But for safety reasons a full road closure will be in operation between 9.30am and 4.30pm on August 18 and 19 so that the road can be resurfaced. A signed diversion route will be in place for these two days.
Businesses on Sundorne Road will remain open at all times, but during the weekend of the road closure access will be required via the signed diversion route.
A spokesman for Shropshire Council said: “The total cost of the works taking place to improve Sundorne Road and create access to the medical centre is £180,000.”
Council bosses have apologised for the disruption.
Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said: “As always, we will endeavour to complete this work as quickly as possible with minimum disruption to road users and nearby properties.”

I see no reason why this should be so disruptive? Surely the construction of the splays will be entirely off road in the extremely wide verges. Traffic lights for the crossing (EVEN MORE BLOODY LIGHTS) fifty yards from an existing set of lights are again all work in the verges. Thrust bore the cable routes. There is plenty for room of contractor’s vehicles and stores in the verges so all preparations right up to resurfacing can be carried out without disruption. Having resurfaced, everything else is paint and can be done on the day of resurfacing. So two days of disruption using diversions. Even the disruptive work could be done overnight with only marginal disruption.
The bigger problem I see is that Sundorne Road is breaking up due to the increase in traffic caused by the construction of the by pass. All bus routes going east out town, Police and Fire services, and north Shrewsbury commuters now use this once quite route as their main route and we keep adding delays to the route causing more and more congestion. We need a better solution to the inevitable problem building up on this new arterial route.

Dear Shropshire Star, please could you define 'major disruption'? Doesn't sound that bad to me.

What I said was there was no need for major disruption,if it has been planned properly. That does not mean that it has been planned to avoid disruption or that the contractor will not cause disruption. I fear there will be avoidable disrution, which if they time it right will be major. Flower show week etc.
