New flats bid for former bar and nightclub could cost Bridgnorth £18,000

Bridgnorth could miss out on thousands of pounds of money for affordable homes if fresh plans to turn an "eyesore" building into flats get the go-ahead.

New proposals to turn the former Bar 27 and Boogie Nights nightclub into six flats do not include providing an affordable home or £18,000 in affordable housing contribution – both of which were included in the original plans approved in March last year.

Shropshire Council said the fresh plans had been submitted in line with recent national guidance, which states developers building fewer than 10 homes should not have to contribute to affordable housing or payments for low cost homes.

The building in Listley Street has been empty for a number of years.

Until 1996 it was home to the Comrades Club.

Councillor Vanessa Voysey, mayor of Bridgnorth, said turning the building into flats would be an improvement.

She said: "The building is a bit of an eyesore. Personally, I think it'll be good to put it to use.

"It's going to be six homes for somebody and using a building that is empty."

The plans for the flats, proposed by applicant William Cash, on behalf of developers SPB Properties, will be discussed at Bridgnorth Town Council's planning committee on Monday night.
