Plans to build homes and flats on a former Telford car park have been given the go-ahead.

A decision to give the green light to an application to build 19 houses and six flats will see the final phase of redevelopment work on the centre of Hadley be completed.

The properties will be made available for affordable rent as part of Nuplace, a Telford & Wrekin Council scheme where it acts as the landlord to bring in cash for the authority.

Council officers had recommended the plans for approval and no objections were received from residents living nearby.

It was unanimously approved by Telford & Wrekin Council's planning committee at a meeting held at Telford's Whitehouse Hotel.

Former mayor, Councillor Leon Murray, who is a member of the committee, has welcomed the move.

He said: "The people of Hadley have been waiting for quite some time for this to be finished. It has been boarded up for some time.

"I get stick whenever I walk down there, with people asking me when it is going to be finished. It will make a big difference."

Telford & Wrekin Council's private housing company Nuplace has now let all of the 101 properties currently being built at Woodland Walk in Madeley.

Tenants have already moved in to the first 52 properties with the remaining 47 houses to be occupied by the end of the year once building work has finished.

Work is about to start on phase two of the project, which will see another 160 homes for rent built on sites across the borough.

Work has already begun to build Nuplace rental homes at Matlock Avenue in Dawley and planning permission has been secured for homes at Madeley Court, while work on another site in Newport is due to start on site next year, also subject to planning permission.

The Oaklands in Dawley is the first of four new sites being delivered by Nuplace as a part of the next phase.

It includes 47 homes which will be available for private rent by Nuplace alongside 44 homes for private sale by Lovell Homes.

These are expected to be ready for tenants to move into from summer 2017.

A further development of 31 properties at Pool View in Randlay is also fully occupied.

The council set up Nuplace in a bid to generate more money to off-set cuts due to cuts in Government funding.
