Plans to build 150 homes in Telford would be "diabolical" according to councillors.

Members of Donnington and Muxton Parish Council's planning committee objected to plans to build the homes off Wellington Road in Muxton.

They unanimously disagreed with the plans and called for them to be decided by Telford & Wrekin Council's planning committee, rather than decided by officers under delegated powers.

Residents from Muxton turned out at the meeting in Turreff Hall in Donnington on Monday to share their concerns over the plans.

More than 300 residents have signed a petition against the plans, which has been handed to borough council officers.

Under the latest project, agents acting for Seabridge Developments Ltd have lodged an outline planning application to build 150 houses off Wellington Road, along with a new access road. An access and design statement for the scheme is proposing 150 high quality homes of which 25 per cent will be affordable properties, a playarea, and a link way to Muxton.

It comes ahead of a public inquiry over plans to build 110 homes nearby in Muxton Lane.

Chairman of the parish council's planning committee, Councillor Vic Rainsford, said the plans were "diabolical."

He added: "If they allow that then they will be able to build the other 110."Having the access from Wellington Road will be dangerous because of the bend."

Councillors raised concerns about existing speeding issues on the road and clerk Ralph Morgan said the council was already trying to have traffic calming measures put onto the road.

Councillor Lisa Dugmore added: "It is outside the urban boundary, that is the number one objection. It is not under the local plan. People in Muxton are not against development but what they want is sustainable development."

"There are plenty of brownfield sites in Telford, they don't need to be building on sites like this."

Councillor John Thompson said: "We are all after new houses but over the years, Muxton has had its fair share.

"It really is over-development, we have got to keep some land.

As well as the traffic concerns, members objected to the plans siting that it was outside the urban boundary of Telford, the large scale of the development, the need to protect green belt land, that it is within a mineral consultation area along with issues about the local ecology and flooding issues in the area.

They added that the homes would put added strain on the infastructure in Muxton, where the primary school is already oversubscribed.

The plans will now go before Telford & Wrekin Council's planning committee to be decided later this year.
