Dr Laura Davies, who stood in the constituency in 2015, will fight for election once again, despite giving birth to her second child just eight weeks ago.

She said: "I'm proud to once again represent the Labour Party here in Shrewsbury & Atcham, and I will be proud to represent all residents in Parliament.

"I relish the opportunity to go out and fight for the people of this constituency against a divisive and callous Conservative government.

"I intend to campaign hard to protect the future of the NHS. As a doctor myself I have seen at first hand how the NHS is under more pressure than I can ever remember.

"Under the Tories our NHS has been disgracefully underfunded and is critically threatened. The NHS deserves better."

Dr Davies said she would also be a strong voice for the region when it comes to Brexit negotiations.

She said: "The Tory policy of 'Brexit at any cost' risks the economic prosperity of this area. Fifty per cent of overseas trade is with the EU - I will campaign to keep Britain in the single market and customs union to protect jobs and prosperity.

"We must protect the rights of EU citizens already in the country, and ensure that EU citizens with the skills we need are able to live and work here, helping to grow our economy.

"The Tory approach risks leaving the EU without a deal and is irresponsible and dangerous."

Councillor Alan Mosley, Chairman of the Shrewsbury and Atcham Labour Party, member of Shropshire Council and leader of Shrewsbury Town Council said he was pleased with the candidate.

He said: "There's no doubt that the people of Shrewsbury and Atcham have been let down by the Tory Government and its local MP.

"We now have a superb, energetic candidate, Dr Laura Davies, and we are delighted that Laura will be leading our campaign to win Shrewsbury and Atcham at the General Election once again.

"Voters' support for Laura was clear in the results of the election in 2015 and we can build on that this time, especially as it is clear that only Labour can unseat our current Tory MP."
