Last week analysis of the impact of Brexit by former Tory donor Lord Ashcroft found Mrs May had a 37-point lead over the Labour leader, as 55% of respondents preferred Mrs May as prime minister compared to Mr Corbyn (18%).

As Theresa May called an early general election for June 8, it seemed that Shropshire readers agreed.

Of nearly 19,000 people who took the poll, asking whether Jeremy Corbyn was electable, only 33% said that he was.

The Prime Minister will require the support of two-thirds of MPs to go to the country, with a vote scheduled in the Commons on Wednesday.

The move shocked Westminster, as Mrs May and Number 10 have repeatedly insisted she would not seek a General Election before the scheduled 2020 poll.

Jeremy Corbyn has confirmed Labour will support the vote for a General Election, meaning Mrs May is expected to get the required support of two-thirds of MPs.
