Councillor Connor Furnival, ward member for The Nedge, said he was leaving the party but would not be stepping down as a councillor.

He said: "I am not stepping down as a councillor, I am just stepping down from the group. It is to do with personal circumstances.

"I feel I still have a lot more work to do in my ward and a lot more to give to people. I plan to continue my tenure until 2019 and will consider what to do then."

Councillor Nicola Lowery, Telford & Wrekin Council ward member for Ironbridge, said: "As the Telford & Wrekin Conservative Group secretary and chairman of the Telford Conservative Association, I announce that Councillor Connor Furnival has decided to formally resign from the Conservative whip and the party, with immediate effect.

"This resignation is due to personal circumstances and he has taken the opportunity to wish Telford & Wrekin Conservatives and the party every success moving forward."

In 2015, Councillor Furnival was temporarily suspended from the party after it emerged he had a conviction for assaulting the mother of his son.
