Councillor Lee Carter, a member of Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet is being investigated by the party after attending two different branch meetings.

But in posts on social media, he claimed the investigation was due to his support for the leadership challenger.

More than 500 councillors across the country have backed MP Owen Smith to become the leader of the Labour Party over Jeremy Corbyn.

On Twitter, Mr Carter posted: "I'm now under investigation by local Labour Party for not supporting Jeremy Corbyn.

"Sad times. Love for Labour will not leave me."

About 13 party members complained after Mr Carter attended a meeting of the south Telford branch of the Labour party, where he is a member, before attending a meeting of the Wellington branch, where he is a councillor. It is not clear whether he voted at the meetings.

Derek White, vice-chairman of the South Telford Labour Party said: "It is a silly complaint.

"A complaint has been made but that is now in the hands of the executive and they will deal with it.

"While it is being dealt with it is not possible to comment on it any further."
