A Shropshire MP has welcomed Deputy Prime Minster Nick Clegg’s decision to drop support for controversial plans to redraw Parliamentary constituency boundaries.
The Liberal Democrats said yesterday that they would block Tory plans in retaliation for the Conservatives torpedoing House of Lords reform.
Telford's Labour MP, David Wright, welcomed Mr Clegg’s decision. His constituency would have seen big changes under the plans.
Mr Wright said he believed the proposals drawn up by the Boundary Commission were ‘poorly constructed’.
He was speaking after a major fallout among Coalition leaders caused by Prime Minster David Cameron dropping plans for reform of the House of Lords.
In response Mr Clegg – who had championed Lords reform in the build-up to the 2010 General Election – said his party would not support the Tories’ boundary reforms when they go before Parliament next year.
He said the Conservatives had ‘broken the contract’ of the Coalition.
The proposals were put forward to reduce the number of parliamentary seats across Britain from 650 to about 600.
Mr Wright said today: “I thought that the Boundary Commission proposals relating to Telford were poorly constructed and I hope we have seen the back of these plans.”
Speaking on a blog last week, Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies said he would be happy to see the planned boundary changes dropped. He said: “From a personal perspective, I would be absolutely delighted if this were to happen, because it would save my constituency from obliteration, and leave me with a seat to defend.”
