People have been sending in their favourite winter snaps in order to compete for a prize.

Some of the scenes submitted to the Star Witness section of the Shropshire Star website include snow covered hill tops, inquisitive wildlife and stunning sunsets.

Alex Ford from Ruyton XI Towns sent in a beautiful image of a double rainbow, shot at the top of The Cliffe, near to Ruyton XI Towns.

Another shot taken at the right place at the right time is Steve Oliver's, from Shrewsbury. His picture looks back along the River Severn with the mist rising.

Some of the best sunsets have been captured by Shropshire photographers. Howard Jones from Greenfields, Shrewsbury, managed to capture the sun setting through the woods - depicting the often intense orange and red colours of the sun and the surrounding sky at this time of year.

The time of sunset is defined in astronomy as the moment when the edge of the sun disappears below the horizon.

Locations north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle experience no sunset or sunrise at least one day of the year, when the polar day or the polar night persists continuously for 24 hours.

Over the next few days the weather conditions should present an opportunity for photographers to create the next section of prize winning snaps.

Rain is due to clear south-eastwards quickly today before turning colder with sunshine and showers following, some turning wintry over the hills. Temperatures will reach 12C (53.6F).

Similar conditions are forecast tomorrow, remaining windy with temperatures reaching 7C (44.6 F). More persistent rain is due on Monday morning, clearing to sunny spells later.
