Anthony Lee Orwell, of Victoria Quays, Market Drayton, denied making an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose when he appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday.

He was deemed fit to plead after a psychiatric report.

Orwell, 62, is accused of making 11 petrol bombs out of wine bottles filled with a mixture of petrol and two stroke oil, with paper towels fastened to the top with tape.

He was reported to have been threatening to ignite the petrol close to where he lives on September 8.

A number of armed police officers and a police negotiator attended the scene.

Orwell's trial will start on February 23 and is expected to last three days.

There will be a pre-trial review on February 9.

He remains in custody.
