Shropshire welcome for French visitors

A party of young visitors from Shifnal's twin town in France have come to Shropshire for a week - complete with their own accommodation.

"They're bringing their own camping equipment," said Sue Podmore, of Shifnal Twinning Association.

The town is twinned with Machecoul and a group of 24 youngsters and three adult leaders were due to arrive on Thursday, August 17, staying at a campsite in Much Wenlock.

"Because of the V Festival weekend, places around here are busy, and this is the nearest we can find for them to stay.

"They are aged 12 to 16 and are from a youth group in Machecoul."

They were due to be welcomed by the Mayor of Much Wenlock at the Guildhall in Much Wenlock on the afternoon of Friday, August 18, and on Monday members of Shifnal Twinning Association will be welcoming them at Shifnal's youth club at 10am.

"After that, at about 11am, they will go to Idsall to play cricket, so long as it's not pouring with rain."

She said the French youngsters would next week be with a group of young people from the Shifnal and Albrighton Say Yes project - it's a youth group - with games on Tuesday, and a trip to Telford Town Park on Wednesday.

The groundwork for the trip had been laid at a twinning visit from Machecoul in April in which a youth leader from the French town was among the party, and the arrangements were made.
