Officers at Market Drayton's police station were shocked to see the cutlass-type sword brought in voluntarily on Tuesday.

PC Alan Ambrose of the town's Safer Neighbourhood Team confirmed the sword was genuine and said: "The sword was handed in in good faith, it has now been scheduled for destruction.

"I was quite amazed when I saw it.

"It could have been an ornament, we're unsure at the moment."
