Tributes have been paid to Derek Yardley, of The Dairy, Nordley, near Bridgnorth, who died on September 5, and has been described as a “quiet, calm, and knowledgeable man” who was “well known for being part of the community”.

Yesterday, an inquest heard how Mr Yardley, 70, had been sailing around the Greek island on a yacht with his family on September 5.

Tragedy struck after the family had anchored the boat and were relaxing on a beach near Chania. Mr Yardley was said to have been swimming towards the yacht but was then seen face down in the water.

He was rescued from the sea and CPR was attempted, but despite the efforts he was confirmed dead by local medics who had taken him for treatment.

Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Coroner John Ellery recorded a conclusion of accidental death at an inquest hearing yesterday.

Mr Yardley was recognised for his expertise in dairy farming technology.

His son, Simon Yardley, 35, said: “He was well known for being part of the community and his expertise.

“He retired 10 years ago and enjoyed cycling, country dancing, playing bridge and walking.

“He also enjoyed travelling and had been to Canada and New Zealand since retiring. He was a quiet, calm and knowledgeable man who will be missed by the whole family.”

Mr Yardley was born and raised in the Bridgnorth area and was a former pupil of The Down Primary School and Fishmore School in Ludlow.

He leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Sue, 67, daughters Rachel, 39, and Lynn, 41, and his seven-year-old granddaughter Rosa Purdie.

At the inquest, Mr Ellery said a pathologist had given the cause of death was drowning.

He concluded: “I accept the result of the post mortem in Crete as drowning in the sea and as that is an accidental death that is the conclusion I record.”

Mr Yardley’s funeral will take place at Emstrey Crematorium, Shrewsbury, at 10am tomorrow and will be followed by a service of celebration and thanksgiving at The Parish Church of St Giles, Chetton, near Bridgnorth, at 12.30pm.

Mr Yardley’s family have requested donations in lieu of flowers, which will be divided between The Midlands Air Ambulance and the British Heart Foundation.
