Good rating for Bridgnorth care company

A care company in Bridgnorth has been praised for offering a safe and caring service – but health inspectors said record-keeping must improve.

Goodwood Homecare cares for people living in their own homes.

A newly-published report by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), following an inspection of the service last month, said people were protected from harm and abuse and staff were trained to meet their needs.

Inspectors also praised the good relationships between staff and those they cared for.

But the CQC found examples of poor record-keeping and the service was rated as "requires improvement" for how well-led it was.

It was given a "good" rating overall and was rated good for how safe, effective, caring and responsive it is.

The report said: "Although systems were in place to monitor the quality of the service provided, we found these were not always effective in identifying issues with record keeping.

" Audits were completed on people's care records and the manager was kept updated on the outcomes from these audits by the staff who completed them.

"However, we found these systems had not been effective in identifying and addressing a continuous incidence of poor record keeping.

"We saw one person's medicine record where the frequency and dosage of their medicine was not recorded."

It also said checks were completed on potential new staff to make sure they were suitable to support people and people received the support they needed to help make sure they received their medicines when they needed them.

Inspectors said skills were kept up to date through regular training and staff were supported in their roles by managers and their colleagues.

The report added: "People were happy and positive about the service they received.

"Staff were motivated to provide the best care they could and they understood the needs of the people they supported.

"Staff were happy in their work and were clear about their roles and responsibilities; they felt supported by management and involved in the development of the service."

Julie Claassen, director of Goodwood Homecare, said: "We've been going for less than a year.

"We are looking after 32 clients and employ 24 members of staff.

"Our reputation has built so much in Bridgnorth.

"We are really pleased with what we have achieved and we are making a difference. We've grown slowly and carefully.

"They found gaps in one person's record because they had been in hospital.

"We've given so much training on how to fill in documents and we are retraining people.

"It was a bit disappointing that we didn't get all good. We do go the extra mile."
