Letter - Drop-off point needed at Telford Town Centre
My fiancee has been working in Telford Town Centre for just under one year. She catches the bus to work and I collect her in the evenings.
My fiancee has been working in Telford Town Centre for just under one year. She catches the bus to work and I collect her in the evenings.
Her shifts vary from a 3pm to an 8.30pm finish on late closing days.
The issue I have is there is nowhere to collect her from.
Telford Town Centre has no drop-off/collection point.
It is possible to enter Asda car park but this means I will be charged 50p, that’s just ridiculous – 50p every night just to collect someone!
I could wait by the Odeon cinema, but that has double yellow lines and also would be dangerous on dark nights for a lone woman to walk under the underpasses from the town centre. The only option is the bus station but this is also illegal, as that is for buses and taxis only.
Surely this matter should be addressed, as while I wait (illegally on double yellow lines or no stopping areas) I find I am not alone and see the same cars most nights – I guess this is also people collecting loved ones from working in the town centre.
I am fully aware that some people would abuse this collection area, but surely there could be some kind of pass available for the parking meters or even an area with a 10-15 minute waiting period?
I simply don’t think it’s fair that the people who work in the town centre and rely on a lift home from loved ones, have to walk in the winter around the town centre and through dark underpasses to find a car waiting for them illegally.
These people work hard in the town centre, surely something can be provided for them so they can get home safely and easily.

if you know what time fiancee finishes then time it right to go into asda car park as you get in and out in less than 10 minutes you dont even need to validate your ticket
towbar
Who told you that ??? Hearsay needs proof and is worthless until you've done it yourself and know it works.
Jeff
Pretty sure there's a pick-up point at the back of BHS that you don't have to go thru the barriers to access
towbar
There is
Caroline
there is a pick up point behind BHS but you cannot get to it if the shop is closed ??!!

There's an old bus layby on Lawn Central that I use to get dropped off at. I think it has a single yellow line though.

Lots of people use the bus stop outside Matheson House for dropping off and picking up (Grange Central opposite the Asda petrol station).
Alternatively there's a small car park up the ramp opposite Cherry Pink (outside Wetherspoons) which gives you 15 minutes free.

The car park outside Wetherspoons costs £1 for 1 hour. There is NO free parking on it.

Going off on a slight tangent, I have nowhere to leave my horse when I ride to the Town Centre. I'd like to see stable facilities for people who travel by horse - after all, using a horse is much more environmentally friendly than cars, buses or trains!

yawn !!
Same here!
I have to agree with Peter, occasionally I pick up my sister from primark and face the same problem, there are lots of other drivers and taxis that use the same place as I have but there is no designated area for the purpose and in effect we are all parking illegally and dangerously as I understand the place we park is for delivery lorries coming and going from the rear of the stores there. This issue does need addressing ASAP , I always dread the traffic wardens or police officers passing through, we will end up getting in trouble for no fault of our own! And to be honest the money the town center makes on a daily basis I'm sure is plenty for the owners to be able to provide this facility.

If you are in and out of the car park in less than 10 minutes you do not need to pay the 50p.
Plus, there is the area next to the grey car park at the back of Asda. When entering the car park, take the right hand lane instead of the left into the car park and you can drop or pick up there, at the back of BHS.

You used to be able to stop/wait in the area outside Hazeldine House and where the Wetherspoons and Iceland are for short periods- have they stopped you using that now ???
Dan Bennett
Fully agreed!
Many times cars park at the bus stop by Capgemini too. And in the bus station where Taxis are meant to go and where buses are meant to park when they go out of service.
I get picked up at the bus station too. I come off the bus from somewhere and end up being picked up from there. There isn't anywhere else close to be picked up from which is bizarre!
It really needs addressed. And quickly.
Stephanie
I do not live in the area anymore but isn't there a drop off point at the rear of BHS still? You don't have to enter the car park at all.
Alison
Nobody thought of this when implementing parking charges as it wasnt a problem before you had to pay!
Paul
yeah theres still a drop of point behind primark thats where the taxi's always drop me off so they dont have the hassle of the parking
towbar
Taxis do not pay for any of the TC car parks, the drivers have cards which allow them in and out whenever they want at no cost whatever.

Could just get the bus back like everyone else has to!!!
Doug
Ahh but if you don't get out of work til 8:30, the bus they might need to catch will have either stopped for the night, or gone to an hourly service.

no the primark .bhs layby is for delivery vehicles only and although there is a ten minute leway on asda. im sure many of you have finished work unexpectedly late ! . so arriving just intime to collect someone does not always work as planned. as for weatherspoons. its always full and it means people would have to walk around the outside of the town center. not good for a lone woman . especialy on dark nights
katy
There is a drop off point at the bottom of wetherspoons ramp with 30mins free parking if u remain in the car, also none of the car parks charge if u are under 10mins, and there's also the drop off point at the back of the library, I dropped off and picked up my brother for 3 years with no problems it just depends which part of town they work in I suppose.

All car parks are free for 10 minutes ?? Complete load of tosh. Has anyone actually gone in,parked for 10 and got out again without paying ?? THE BARRIER WILL ONLY OPERATE IF THE CARD ISSUED TO GET IN HAS BEEN CHECKED AND VALIDATED BY A PAY STATION
Another Bob
I have gone into the town centre, parked, done what I need to do and got out within 10 mins without paying for the car park.
Though it is a bit hit and miss as the ticket machines on entry don't always have their clocks synchronised with the ones to validate your ticket, so you may have been less than 10 mins, but the difference between your ticket stamp and the machines internal time is more and you get charged.

Use a motorcycle instead - cheaper to run, and most car parks don't charge for bikes. Even if they do charge, it's easy enough to dodge the barrier.

If your friend has a mobile phone then get her to phone you when she has finished work and pick her up you are allowed 10 minutes free at town centre parks SIMPLES
Julia
There is a pickup point at BHS, if you around the car park barriers so they are on your right, almost looks like you are driving into the back of Marks's as the road goes around. Simple. No yellow lines or parking ticket required.
