Healthcare group Bupa is contracted to run the homes for Powys County Council until May 2019.

They includes care homes in Welshpool, Newtown, Llanfyllin, Llandrindod Wells, Presteigne, Builth Wells and Machynlleth.

Last year Bupa was looking to sell the homes but the deal with another care provider was blocked when the authority threatened legal action.

The council said at the time it had been unaware of the company's intentions.

Now the council is to start a tender negotiation .

Stephen Hayes, cabinet member for adult services said: "This will enable full control of the selection process but also provide assurance and confidence from Bupa that the company chosen is the right choice for our residents and also a seamless and swift transfer of the contract and management."

Care Inspectorate Wales will be involved in the process, and part of it will also see the county council develop backup plans to bring the management of the service back into council control.

Councillor Hayes, added: "These plans will reduce the risk to the council if no provider was forthcoming from the tender exercise."
