Future Fit: Princess Royal Hospital could have centre for all eye treatment in Shropshire

One single centre for eye treatment in the county is set to be created at Telford's Princess Royal Hospital.

The proposal is included in papers due to be discussed by the board of Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) on Thursday.

Under Future Fit plans the service, which is currently on three sites, would be based at the hospital in Telford.

It comes after SaTH's ophthalmology department temporarily suspended referrals for glaucoma, as well as general and adult squint referrals in order to clear a backlog and reduce waiting times.

It is expected the suspension will last until late summer or early autumn.

The papers due to be discussed by the board state: "The ophthalmology team at SaTH believes it is unable to continue to provide services across three sites.

"To reduce to two sites would improve the position greatly. The preferred view is that one site would deliver greatest benefit and provide a sustainable ophthalmology service for the county and Mid Wales. It is recognised that under the Future Fit preferred option this site would be PRH."

Debbie Kadum, chief operating officer at SaTH, said the outpatient service has been housed in temporary accommodation at PRH and in a 'cramped' clinic at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for many years.

A third site which also delivers outpatients and day surgery procedures is at the Wrekin Community Clinic, Telford, within Euston House.
