Telford A&E could close overnight

Telford's accident and emergency department could close overnight later this year.

A report going to the board which runs Royal Shrewsbury and Telford's Princess Royal tomorrow states they should start drawing up plans now due to staffing shortages.

Health bosses say due to the low number of consultants in their A&E departments, the trust is not in a position to deliver safe and effective A&E departments on both sites.

The report asks members of the board to give the go-ahead to start planning for the closure of Telford A&E from 8pm until 8am, with emergency cases being taken to Shrewsbury instead.

Walk-in cases would still be dealt with by an Urgent Care Centre in Telford, which could take non-emergency cases.

Planning for the overnight closure will take six months.
