Letter: Single Shropshire A&E on the way

Following the various reports over the past two years on the shortage of consultants in our two A&E departments, it is surprising both have been kept open so far.

Is this in part because those who want the A&E and women and children's unit to be based at Shrewsbury, don't want to 'muddy the waters' on any decision?

If the A&E unit was being closed at Shrewsbury, I suspect it would demonstrate that the whole system would work fine from Telford.

If the A&E unit was being closed at Telford, I suspect it would demonstrate that the whole system would work fine from Shrewsbury.

However, it would probably also show the women and children's would continue to function well at Telford without the A&E.

I am sure that once the plan to move the women and children's unit/consultant maternity, stroke care and base the trauma unit at Shrewsbury has been rubber-stamped and started, we will see one accident department. If this is at Telford, it will only be temporary while the RSH site is developed.

Personally, if the services are to move to Shrewsbury, I would like to see a new site developed on the east of the town. Many of the buildings at the RSH are past their shelf life and a new site would benefit all.
