Rotherwood Health Care wants to build the care home within the grounds of Roden Hall Care Home, in Roden Lane, Roden.

According to plans lodged with Telford & Wrekin Council, the development would form the first phase of a wider project to provide a care home village on the site.

A report, submitted with the plans, states: "The care village will provide high quality living accommodation for the elderly and those suffering from dementia; and will provide a range of services and accommodation types.

"The accommodation and services will meet a wide spectrum of care service requirements, including supported independent living, nursing and palliative care."

It says that the current care home building is "no longer suited to meet modern care standards".

The overall masterplan for the site would be carried out in several phases.

Nursing and palliative care for the elderly and dementia sufferers would be provided at the replacement care home.

It would be able to cater for 66 residents.

The plans also state that the development would help create jobs and safeguard existing roles.

The report says: "The premises do not currently meet modern standards and cannot continue to operate within the existing Roden Hall building.

"The new replacement building sits within the existing curtilage of Roden Hall which is previously developed land.

"The development will make an important contribution to the provision of jobs in the rural area both in the short term through the construction of the building but also long term through the employment of care staff.

"This will see an existing 62 employees are able to keep their employment whilst providing opportunity for a further 30 new care and support staff."

Roden Hall was built in 1868 as a convalescent home for millworkers.

The building was extended and converted about 30 years ago and currently provides private nursing accommodation for up to 50 elderly people, including dementia sufferers.

The new development would be built at the back of the wider Roden Hall site, positioned to the north of the existing building and car park.

It is thought that Roden Hall could then be refurbished and turned into self-contained but supported living apartments for the elderly.

A further six new bungalows are also planned within the grounds of Roden Hall to provide retirement accommodation.

A decision on the planning application is expected to be made by Telford & Wrekin Council in the upcoming months.
