The trust which controls Shropshire's two main hospitals has bucked the trend by not increasing its car parking charges in the past year.

It comes as figures show a third of hospital trusts in England have increased their charges in the same time frame.

Some are now charging as much as £4 for a one-hour stay. The analysis includes figures obtained directly from NHS trusts and data submitted to NHS Digital.

Health bosses recently said parking charges at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Telford's Princess Royal Hospital, both run by Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust, are still among the cheapest in the country. People are able to park for up to 30 minutes without charge and pay £3.50 for five hours or more.

New number plate recognition technology became operational at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford in June this year. It was launched at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in 2013.

Simon Wright, chief executive of SaTH, previously said all the money that comes into the hospital through parking charges goes towards providing services and equipment for patients.

Some trusts in England have scrapped a one or two-hour charge, meaning people have to pay a flat fee for three hours even if they are only staying for 45 minutes.

The research showed the most expensive trust in the country for a one-hour stay is the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, where patients are forced to pay £4 for any stay up to two hours.
