A total of nine awards were presented at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust's first-ever Values In Practice Awards.

The ceremony was held at the Park Inn hotel in Telford to mark the achievements and contributions of staff in delivering care to their patients.

More than 100 members of staff were also presented with long service awards to recognise that they have worked in the NHS for more than 25 years.

Simon Wright, chief executive of SaTH, said it was important to recognise the dedication of staff at the organisation.

He said: "To sit in a room full of so many brilliant members of staff who live our values – proud to care, make it happen, we value respect and together we achieve – every day was truly inspiring and it is of huge importance that we celebrate the fantastic work that takes place across our trust everyday by staff, volunteers and charities.

"When the VIP Awards were first launched we asked our staff to nominate outstanding individuals and teams for the nine different awards, and nominate they did.

"We received hundreds of worthy nominations that provided the judging panels with a really difficult job when it came to narrowing each category down to a shortlist of just three.

"I thank all of our staff for the hard work and dedication they put into their job every day."

The 2016 VIP Awards, which were presented by Vicki Archer, co-presenter of BBC Radio Shropshire's Drive show, will become an annual event.

The winners of the 'kindest award' were the trust's bariatric team, the 'safest award' went to patient safety adviser Brenda Muxton, and the 'bright star award' winner was Victoria Jefferson, the operational head pharmacist at Princess Royal Hospital.

The 'transforming care award' went to Rachel Redgrave the operations manager for oncology and haematology and Dr Sheena Khanduri, cancer services clinical lead.

Laura Kavanagh took the 'VIP award', the 'leadership for change award' went to Emma Jones, advanced clinical practitioner, and the 'outstanding achievement award' was given to Barbara Dyson, clerk on ward eight.

The 'team of the year award' was claimed by the end of life steering group, while the 'public choice award' went to volunteers of the year Barbara and Terry Seston.

Barbara and Terry are both 81 years old, work in the X-ray department at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital having started working at the hospital six years ago.

Barbara is also a Befriender on ward 20, meeting people who do not have any visitors to talk to while they are in hospital.

Terry also went round the wards with the patient experience survey to find out people's experiences on their time in hospital.
