Disgust over fly-tipping mess at The Wrekin

A mound of tiles and black plastic bags were found dumped near to a popular walking trail at The Wrekin

The waste was fly-tipped nearby Ercall Lane, close to the start of the Wrekin trail.

It was spotted by Brendan Robinson, who took this picture on Monday morning.

Mr Robinson, aged 41, of Priorslee, Telford, said: "I often walk up The Wrekin but it's the first time I've seen fly-tipping on that scale.

"We were up there at about 10am. It looks like tiles, possibly asbestos and black plastic bags have been dumped there.

"It was near to the main track going up The Wrekin.

"It was visible from the road and it was just an eyesore.

"I am concerned that as the recycling arrangements are changed that fly-tipping might increase."

The dump was spotted just weeks after residents in Telford & Wrekin were offered a new seven-day service at a new recycling centre located at Hortonwood 50, with improvements made to the existing site at Halesfield, following the closure of the Ketley and Granville sites.

Both the sites are now open 9am to 5pm, seven days a week, 362 days a year.

Councillors and residents in the borough spoke out last month, saying there was "no excuse" for rubbish dumping in the neighbouring countryside after changes to Telford's recycling centre meant the borough's tips were open more often.

It came after David Gittus, of Wellington Road, Newport, spotted a mattress and bed frame dumped on the road between Kynnersley and Wall while out cycling last month.

Mr Robinson said he had reported the fly-tipping at The Wrekin to Telford & Wrekin Council.

Telford & Wrekin Council spokesman Russell Griffin confirmed the council has received the report but said the rubbish had been dumped on private land, and therefore the landowner was responsible for cleaning up the mess.

He added that the authority had been made aware about a separate incident of fly-tipping on council land elsewhere at The Wrekin and was arranging for it to be removed.
