Woman 'unaccounted for' after house destroyed and another severely damaged in Shropshire blaze

A woman is "unaccounted for" after a house was completely gutted and another severely damaged after a blaze in a village near Clun.

The blaze broke out in a pair of semi-detached bungalows on Chestnut Meadow, Bucknell, near Clun, at 5.30am.

One home was completely engulfed in flames, and another was severely damaged.

A West Mercia Police spokesman said: "A woman currently remains unaccounted for and the building is currently being made safe to enable fire officers to enter the property."

Five fire crews from across south Shropshire and neighbouring Hereford were sent to the scene after the alarm was raised amid fears that people were inside the bungalows.

In all 10 firefighters donned breathing apparatus to go into the properties.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said at 8am that its operation was still on-going and that it could not comment on reports that one person was unaccounted for.

Fire investigation officers are at the scene.

A West Mercia Police spokesman added: "A home has been significantly damaged and adjoining properties evacuated after the fire broke out at around 5.40am this morning .

"A woman currently remains unaccounted for and the building is currently being made safe to enable fire officers to enter the property.

"The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed but is not currently believed to be suspicious."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We treated two patients, both men, for minor smoke inhalation at the scene.

"Neither of them needing transporting to hospital and were discharged at the scene."
