Overturned van blocks A5 in Shropshire

A van overturned during the morning rush hour blocking the busy A5 in Shropshire.

The van ended up on its side near to the roundabout for the Nesscliffe bypass.

It happened shortly before 6.40am today and caused hold ups between Weirbrook and Nesscliffe, near to the Shotatton crossroads.

Drivers reported long tailbacks and 15-minute delays, which cleared shortly after 9am.

West Midlands Ambulance Service attended, and confirmed the driver, in his 50s, was uninjured and able to get out the vehicle.

Police also attended.

Daniel Butler, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "At approximately 6:40am today, West Mercia Police received a report of a vehicle overturned on the A5 near Nesscliffe.

"We further received a report that a man was trapped in the vehicle, a Suzuki van.

"At approximately 6:55am it was confirmed that the man was no longer insider the vehicle."

The fire service was also called out, with four crews from Baschurch, Shrewsbury and Wellington at the scene, including the rescue tender. They made the vehicle safe.
