Some of the straw was still burning this morning, nearly 12 hours after firefighters rushed to the scene in Chetton, near Bridgnorth.

The majority of the roof and much of the walls of the 100 metre by 30m barn were destroyed by the flames, while a tractor and a 4x4 car were also visibly severely damaged.

Fire crews from Bridgnorth, Craven Arms and Much Wenlock worked throughout the night to put out the blaze, which was under control by about 8am this morning.

They continued to use rakes to deal with the last of the burning straw and were expecting to remain at the scene, off the B364 between Bridgnorth and the Shropshire Hills, throughout Sunday.

An investigation is underway into what caused the fire, but it is believed to have been started accidentally.

A neighbour said he thought that the fire was fireworks when it first broke out, and he headed to the barn with other neighbours and the owner to rescue the cattle.

The man, who did not wish to be named, said: "We thought we heard fireworks, and as a couple of our dogs don't like fireworks they started making noise.

"There were four of us taking about 30 cattle from the barn next door to a nearby field.

"You've got to do what you've got to do. The owner was there when the fire broke out too. The one barn is completely burned out."

Ashley Brown of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Initial findings would indicate accidental ignition."
