The chase, which happened in the Bridgnorth area, started after a red Ford Mondeo drove off from an unmarked police BMW after being asked to stop and initially pulling over.

The chase resulted in a crash after the police attempted to "box" the Mondeo in, forcing the BMW off the road and allowing the Ford to escape.

A member of the public later discovered the Mondeo, which was also damaged in the crash, abandoned in field in the Highley area.

West Mercia Police say that the Mondeo had initially sped off after appearing to pull over near to Bridgnorth Fire Station, shortly before 10am on Friday.

Now the force is appealing for any information which will help officers identify the driver of the Ford.

A spokesman for Bridgnorth Police said it had been a "serious incident" and urged people with information to get in touch.

He said: "On the morning of Friday, December 16, at just before 10am, there was a serious incident in the Bridgnorth area. A police officer in an unmarked police vehicle tried to pull over a red Ford Mondeo in the area of the fire station, Bridgnorth.

"The vehicle made off after initially pulling over. The Red Mondeo drove out through Bridgnorth, past Sainsbury's and then the police station, being followed by the police vehicle."

The spokesman said that the attempt to "box" the Mondeo in had been made in an effort to protect people from any further risk.

He said: "On entering the area of Oldbury village there was an incident in which both vehicles were damaged after the police attempted to box in the Mondeo in a safe location to prevent further risk to the public. The police vehicle was damaged to such an extent that it could not follow any further.

"Other Officers had been alerted to the incident and were in the area as soon as possible. The Mondeo was later located in the Highley area following a report from a member of the public."

Anyone with information about the incidsent or who saw a red Mondeo on the road between Bridgnorth and Highley on the morning of Friday, December 16, is asked to call police on 101 and quote reference 0158S161216.
