Police patrols increased in Market Drayton to clampdown on careless parking outside schools

Fresh concerns have been raised about dangerous parking outside a town's schools.

One of the latest patrols took place outside Market Drayton Infant and Nursery School, where chaos descends twice a day.

Three people were caught parking inappropriately last week, two of which were given warnings and one a ticket that could result in a fine, driver awareness course or even a court appearance.

The patrol was carried out by Constable Mick Sturland, of the Market Drayton safer neighbourhood team, who has been monitoring parking at schools in the area.

Commenting on the community Facebook page, Michelle Mellor said: "A child will get hurt one day, people drive way too fast near the school.

"Everyone's in a rush in the morning.

"It's understandable but it's not hard to set the alarm clock 10 minutes earlier so that you don't have to risk the lives of small children by rushing."

Debbie Pound suggested: "Isn't the town park next to the school?

"Maybe the council could section some of this off to provide parent drop-off/collection stops? Might be a safer solution."

Karen Kent Barnes added: "I couldn't wait for my kids to finish infants so I didn't have to mess around with the parking there, it was so stressful."

Laura Jane Nixon-turner posted: "I live on a road by the juniors.

"It's just as bad as the infants.

"And I dread the day an emergency service is needed.

"As our road, which isn't two cars wide, wouldn't have room.

"There's no respect for our road or the surrounding."

Constable Sturland said police have been working with schools, which often warn people about the dangers of inappropriate parking in newsletters.

"The feeling of schools is of frustration but they fully support and appreciate what we are doing," he said.

Shropshire Council said parking outside schools is a problem countywide.

And, where possible, it liaises with the police where there are specific issues.

Market Drayton Junior School, Hodnet Primary School and Norton-in-Hales Primary School are among the other schools in the area where concerns are regularly raised.

Dave Gradwell, Shropshire Council area traffic engineer, said following complaints about the parking outside Market Drayton Junior School they are considering the introduction of some additional yellow line parking restrictions in the vicinity of the school.
