Officers say they were alerted to a man "behaving suspiciously" in the Lloyds Lane area of Chirk on Thursday evening.

It comes after police revealed that they were investigating the attempted abduction of two schoolchildren in Oswestry and Weston Rhyn earlier this month.

This week West Mercia Police released an image of a man they want to find in relation to the attempts.

In relation to the latest report Michael McGivern of North Wales Police said: "Police were alerted to a man behaving suspiciously in the Lloyds Lane area of Chirk on Thursday afternoon at 5.55pm.

"A schoolgirl reported that she had been followed by a man after he got out of a black van.

"No contact was made and the girl ran away to a place of safety."

DS Dave Tierney said police have ramped up patrols in the area in a bid to put the public at ease, and asked for anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

He said the force was also talking to West Mercia Police about the reports in Oswestry and Weston Rhyn.

He said: "I am appealing to anyone who saw a man dressed in dark clothing and behaving suspiciously in the area, or who saw a black van parked in Lloyds Lane at around 5.45pm to contact us.

"We are aware of similar reports in Shropshire in recent weeks and we are in touch with our colleagues at West Mercia Police.

"We have increased patrols in the area to reassure the public."

The first reported incident took place on October 12 when an 11-year-old boy was walking home after getting off a school bus at around 3.55pm.

Police say that a man in a black car, believed to be a Renault Clio, called out and falsely claimed that he had been asked to pick him up by the boy's mother.

The boy ran home, with the car seen to drive off in the direction of Trehowell Lane, Weston Rhyn.

The second attempt occurred at 7.50am on October 18 when police reported that a 13 year-old girl was walking on Longueville Drive, Oswestry.

Officers said that as she approached the junction of Aston Way, a small black van pulled up next to her and the driver told her to get into the van.

The girl ran away from the scene.

The man did not leave the vehicle and the girl was not injured or physically touched in any way.
