Fire crews rescue couple from River Severn in Shrewsbury

Two people had to be rescued from the River Severn by firefighters in Shrewsbury late last night.

A man and a woman were pulled from the water near the Welsh Bridge at about 11pm on Saturday.

Four fire engines from Baschurch and Shrewsbury, including the water rescue unit, were sent to Victoria Avenue, which runs along the River Severn between Mardol Quay and the Quarry Park.

Crews used a short extension ladder to rescue the pair

A spokeswoman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "An ambulance was called but it is not known if the people were taken to hospital or not."

Crews left at about 11.10pm.
