Pensioner airlifted to hospital after being trapped in car for 50 minutes

A driver in his 80s has been airlifted to hospital with leg and pelvis fractures after a crash in Whitchurch.

The driver was trapped for about 50 minutes after the smash between a car and a van on Whitchurch Road at around 2.20pm yesterday.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was in attendance as well as Shropshire Fire Service and an air ambulance from Staffordshire.

The car and the van had both suffered significant damage.

Jamie Arrowsmith, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "He was treated for a number of serious injuries, including leg and pelvis fractures.

"He was also suffering from a slightly reduced level of consciousness."

The driver was taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital.
