The alarm was raised when a neighbour heard a smoke alarm sounding from the terraced house in Frankwell, Shrewsbury at 2.10am this morning.

She dialled 999 and fire crews from Shrewsbury and Baschurch were quickly on the scene.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue watch manager, Adam Tempest, said when firefighters arrived at the house they could see it was smoke-logged.

He said: "We forced entry and two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went up to the first floor where they found a man and a dog."

Paramedics also on scene checked the householder over but he did not need hospital treatment.

Mr Tempest said that the fire was out when the crews arrived and they ventilated the house to get rid of the smoke.

He urged householders never to leave cooking unattended, whether it was day or night and also said that the fire showed how smoke alarms did save lives.
