Emergency services were called to the collision on the A5 near Queens Head, south of Oswestry, at about 7.20am today.

An elderly couple in one of the cars were flown by air ambulance to Royal Stoke University Hospital with serious injuries, which were described by the emergency services as "life changing".

A man in the the other car also required hospital treatment.

Meanwhile, a dog was released from one of the vehicles and left in the care of the police. It was not seriously injured.

The accident, which involved a Volkswagen Jetta and Subaru 4x4, caused the A5 to be closed in both directions between the B4397 at Shotatton and the Mile End Roundabout.

It remained closed late into the afternoon because damage caused by the accident meant that part of the carriageway had to be resurfaced.

The accident is believed to have happened after one of the vehicles veered over to the other side of the road.

Four fire appliances, including the rescue tender, were sent to the scene from Oswestry and Wellington.

Crews used specialist cutting equipment to release the casualties.

West Midlands Ambulance Service, the Midlands Air Ambulance and West Mercia Police were also called to the scene.

Highways England tweeted to say that the road remained shut until early tomorrow due to road repairs needed at the scene.
