One casualty has been airlifted to hospital after a crash closed the A53 in Shropshire.

Three fire crews, including the rescue tender, were sent from Hodnet, Market Drayton and Wellington to the crash near Hodnet at about 5.30pm last night.

The driver of the Ford Fiesta, a 25-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and was air lifted to Royal Stoke University Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

The driver of the Jaguar, a 56-year-old man, was taken by ambulance to the Royal Shrewsbury hospital where he was discharged.

Jamie Arrowsmith, communications officer for West Midlands Ambulance, said: "We were called at 5.32pm by police to reports of a two vehicle road traffic collision on the junction of the A53 and A442.

"Two patients were both trapped.

"The man in his 20's was airlifted to Royal Stoke University Hospital with chest and pelvic injuries. He was given pain relief at the scene.

"The second patient was a man in his 50's who had chest and rib injuries. He was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital by land ambulance. He was trapped for about an hour before being cut free.

"One ambulance, a paramedic support officer and Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford attended."

The road remained closed for much of Thursday evening while the scene was cleared.

Witnesses are asked to call West Mercia Police on 101, quoting incident 590S of Thursday, September 1.
