Firefighters arrived at the premises in Albion Street, off Gower Street in St George's, to find the householders standing outside shortly after 1.45am on Sunday.

A man at the property, who did not want to be named, said: "We were still up when we started smelling smoke. We came out to the hallway to have a look and saw smoke coming from the wall next to the front door.

"We dialled 999 and went outside to wait for the fire service. They're investigating what caused it so we're not sure how it started.

"The house got smoke-logged. Our relatives have come round today to help us clear up."

Crews used breathing gear and a hose reel jet to tackle the fire that caused fire damage to the hallway and smoke-logging to the rest of the two-storey premises.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called out shortly after 1.45am yesterday and remained at the scene until 2.12am.

Meanwhile, firefighters dealt with a wheelie bin blaze in Bishopdale, Brookside, Telford, at 10.15am yesterday. Crews were also called after rubbish caught fire in a car park on Coalport Road, Blists Hill in Ironbridge at about 6pm yesterday.
