Detectives are appealing for witnesses after the 53-year old a woman was robbed in Abbey Foregate in Shrewsbury on Tuesday.

Police say she left a restaurant in Abbey Foregate with a friend at about 9.45pm and began to walk towards Abbey Church.

The victim and her friend parted ways and the she began to walk towards her car. As she did so, she felt a tug on her handbag.

"The woman did not let go of her bag and was pulled onto a grassy area near the church by a man, injuring the back of her leg," Detective Sergeant David Meyer said.

"As she lay on the floor the man made off with her handbag and left in the direction of Abbey Lawns."

Officers recovered the handbag but cash had been taken from the victim's purse.

The man is described as white, slim about 5 foot 10 inches tall and in his late teens to early twenties. He was wearing knee length shorts, possibly grey in colour with a light grey zip-up jacket. He was also thought to be wearing trainers and a rucksack.

Detective Sergeant Meyer, said: "Our enquiries so far suggest that a number of people were in the area at the time and may have witnessed the incident. I would appeal directly to these people to come forward and tell police what they saw as it could significantly progress our investigation.

"I would also like to thank those members of the public who have come forward already to speak to officers.

"This was an attack on a vulnerable woman and we are working hard to identify the person responsible."
